Dendrobium antennatum – The Green Antelope Orchid
Dendrobium antennatum is a striking Australian native and tropical species orchid admired for its unusual antelope-like flowers, elegant twisted petals and long-lasting blooms. Commonly known as the Green Antelope Orchid, this distinctive species is native to northern Queensland, New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago and the Solomon Islands. It grows naturally as an epiphyte on trees in coastal forests, mangroves and tropical rainforest habitats.
The flowers are particularly eye-catching, measuring approximately 4–5 cm across, with some blooms reaching around 7.5 cm. They typically feature white sepals and a white lip, contrasted by pale green petals that twist upwards and outwards like antelope horns. The lip often displays attractive purple stripes, adding further detail to the flower. Several blooms appear along an upright to arching flower spike, and the flowers are fragrant and long-lasting.
This medium to large-growing orchid produces clustered, cylindrical pseudobulbs with leathery green leaves arranged along the upper portions of the stems. It thrives in warm to hot conditions, bright light, consistent humidity and excellent air circulation. Regular watering during active growth, combined with good drainage, helps maintain healthy growth and encourage flowering.
