Dendrobium nindii – The Blue Antler Orchid
Dendrobium nindii is a spectacular Australian native orchid prized for its unusual antler-like flowers, tall upright canes and striking mauve to violet blooms. Commonly known as the Blue Antler Orchid, this impressive species is native to northeastern Queensland and New Guinea, where it grows as an epiphyte on trees and palms or as a lithophyte on rocks in tropical coastal forests, mangroves and swampy habitats.
The flowers are particularly distinctive, measuring approximately 5–6 cm across. They feature widely spreading, slightly twisted petals and sepals, typically white to pale mauve with delicate purple stripes. The broad, three-lobed lip is usually mauve to violet, decorated with darker purple veins and three prominent ridges. Mature plants can produce impressive upright to arching flower spikes, carrying 8–20 flowers per spike, creating a spectacular display of antler-like blooms. The flowers are also notably long-lasting.
This robust-growing orchid produces tall, slender, dark brown to almost blackish canes that can reach 2.5 metres in length, with leathery, dark green leaves arranged along the upper portions of the stems. It thrives in warm to hot conditions, strong filtered light, high humidity and excellent air circulation. Regular watering during active growth, combined with good drainage and sufficient space, helps this impressive species develop into a magnificent specimen plant.
