Dendrobium broomfieldii – The Golden Slipper Orchid
Dendrobium broomfieldii is a striking Australian native orchid, now botanically recognised as Dendrobium discolor var. broomfieldii. This distinctive variety is prized for its spectacular golden-yellow flowers, dramatically twisted petals and impressive flowering sprays. Native to Queensland, Australia, it grows naturally as an epiphyte on trees and as a lithophyte on rocks in exposed coastal habitats, where it tolerates bright sunlight and salt-laden air.
The flowers are particularly eye-catching, measuring approximately 4–8 cm across. They typically display glossy canary-yellow to golden-yellow or greenish-yellow petals and sepals, with wavy edges and strongly twisted shapes. The lip features a prominent white callus that contrasts beautifully with the golden blooms. Mature plants can produce long, arching flower spikes carrying numerous flowers, creating an impressive tropical display. Flowering can occur at various times of the year, with a strong flowering period generally from autumn through spring in suitable conditions.
This robust, medium to large-growing orchid develops tall, cane-like pseudobulbs with leathery green leaves arranged along the upper portions of the stems. It thrives in warm to hot conditions, bright light, excellent airflow and regular watering during active growth. Once established, it makes a spectacular specimen plant for tropical gardens and spacious orchid collections.
