Paphiopedilum lowii “Sumatra”

Paphiopedilum lowii is a distinctive, multiflowered slipper orchid native to the wet tropical forests of Malesia. Its unusual flowers combine yellow-green petals with purple tips and maroon spotting, set above the characteristic pouch.

Features:

  • 🌏 Origin: Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, Borneo and Sulawesi.
  • 🌸 Flower size and duration: Flowers are about 9–16.5 cm across, with 3–7 flowers on an erect, arching stem. Flowering duration varies with conditions.
  • 🎨 Flower colour and fragrance: Pale yellow to yellow-green petals with purple tips and maroon spots; the pouch is ochre-brown. Fragrance is not reliably documented.
  • 🌿 Growth habit and mature size: Evergreen, clump-forming orchid without pseudobulbs. Leaves can reach about 40 cm long and flower stems up to 70 cm.
  • 🪴 Plant size: Choose from the available size options below; flowering status depends on the option selected.
  • ☀️ Growing notes: Grow in partial shade with good air movement. Use a moisture-retentive but free-draining orchid mix and water before the plant dries completely. Avoid water sitting in the leaf crown.
  • 📦 Postage: Live plants cannot be posted to Western Australia, the Northern Territory or Tasmania due to quarantine restrictions.
